                          Susan LaFlesche Picotte

Susan LaFlesche was born just as the Native Americans' way of life was being destroyed. She became an M.D. to try and save her people. Did she succeed? Why was she controversial? Read NATIVE AMERICAN DOCTOR to find out.

As a girl from Delaware wrote, "I don't usually read biography books, but I had to read one in Language Arts. Your book [this one] wasn't as bad as I thought it would be."
What more can an author ask??

NATIVE AMERICAN DOCTOR's awards:
  • Carter G. Woodson winner for "most distinguished book written for young readers depicting ethnic diversity in the United States"
  • National Council of the Social Studies/Children's Book Center Notable Children's Trade Book in the Field of Social Studies
  • SCCLCYP Award for "significant contribution to the field of biography"
  • New York Public Library Book for the Teen Age
